VITA – Free Tax Prep Meck Program

Free Tax Prep Meck sites offer free tax help to people who need assistance preparing their own tax returns, including:

  • Low to Moderate Income Families- annual income below $67,000
  • Persons with disabilities; and
  • Limited English-speaking taxpayers

For Taxpayers: We have expanded our location across Mecklenburg County beginning February, 2026

Current year and prior year tax return preparation is available at all sites

Where do I go to get my taxes done?

  • Ada Jenkins Center-

TAX-A-THON: Operating one Saturday each month throughout the season from 10am-3pm. These are walk-in only service with multiple volunteers prepared to assist with tax preparation.

  • February 21st, 2026 (Focus on Past Year Tax Returns)- Myers Park Presbyterian Church: 2501 Oxford Pl, Charlotte, NC 
  • March 14th, 2026 (Focus on Current Year and Past Year Tax Returns)- Goodwill Industries of Southern Piedmont: 5301 Wilkinson Blvd, Charlotte, NC 
  • April 11th, 2026 (Focus on Current Year Tax Returns)- Ascend Nonprofit Solutions: 601 E. 5th Street, Charlotte, NC

    All taxpayers should bring:

    1. Required – Photo ID for taxpayer(s) – driver’s license, State ID card or passport
    2. Required – Social Security Card (or Form SSA-1099 – social security statement) for taxpayer(s) and dependents
    3. RequiredVoided blank check (or access to online banking information) for direct deposit of any tax refund; including routing and account numbers
    4. 2024 tax return
    5. An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter may be substituted for you, your spouse and your dependents if you do not have a Social Security number
    6. Proof of foreign status, if applying for an ITIN
    7. Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return
    8. Wage and earning statements (Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R,1099-Misc) from all employers
    9. Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
    10. Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider’s tax identifying number such as their Social Security number or business Employer Identification Number
    11. Forms 1095-A, Health Coverage Statements
    12. Copies of income transcripts from IRS and state, if applicable

    Note: For married-filing-joint tax returns, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms.

    If you anticipate itemizing your deductions, then please bring:

    • Medical expense documentation
    • Form 1098 (mortgage interest)
    • State and local tax, including property tax, documentation
    • Charitable giving documentation- goods and case

    If you are self-employed, please bring all income and expenses records, and details of miles driven for business. For Uber/Lyft/DoorDash, etc. drivers, please bring your statement of account from the company.

    Please note:  Some situations are outside the program parameters, which will prevent us from preparing your return, including:

    • Rental income or sale of investment property.
    • If you moved from another state to North Carolina or South Carolina during 2025, we may not be able to complete the other state’s tax return.
    • If you sold, exchanged, or otherwise disposed of a digital asset (e.g. bitcoin), we are unable to prepare the return.
    • If you are eligible for Electric Vehicle or Solar Tax Credits, we are unable to prepare your return
    • If you are in bankruptcy, we are unable to prepare the return.
