Your voice matters.

During Black History Month, we recognize the history of Lakeside Park, Davidson’s first affordable Black neighborhood, and its role in shaping local and national housing policy. 🖤🤎🏘

In the 1960s, a fire destroyed a significant portion of Davidson’s low-income rental housing, which was primarily home to Black employees of Davidson College. In response, a collaborative effort among local community leaders and government agencies was formed to develop new housing for African American families.

The first homes in Lakeside Park were built in 1967 using federal funding to support affordable homeownership. This effort became an early model for national affordable housing legislation. ⚖🏡

While this development expanded access to stable, modern housing for many families, the decision to construct Lakeside Park on the opposite side of the town’s railroad tracks reflected and reinforced racial segregation in housing patterns.

This history reminds us of the influence housing policies can have on equitable opportunity and community planning, which remains essential to our mission today. 🖤
