Volunteers range in age from high school students to seniors. Most assignments are at (704) 896-0471.

Schedule
Volunteers' hours are flexible and can be tailored to the needs of the volunteer.

Volunteers at The Ada Jenkins Center do everything from helping in our free clinic to mentoring first graders. The first person a visitor meets at our reception desk is a volunteer.

Volunteers teach computer classes and sort groceries in our food pantry. Last year volunteers donated nearly 14,000 hours of their time and talents to help others in our community.

After School Program Administrative Support One to three hours per week during regular business hours
Assist After School Program staff in creating bulleting boards and other displays, ensure each room is stocked daily with appropriate supplies, assist snack coordinator in preparing snack, assist with administrative tasks such as typing, filing, returning phone calls and e-mail messages, sending mail, create flyers or letters, monitor recess as needed, data entry, help set up and prepare for special events, assist in monthly reporting. Requires excellent organization and computer skills.
After School Program Enrichment Activity Leader Friday afternoons from about 4:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m
Develop an activity for a small group of elementary aged students, including goals. Prepare for each lesson by gathering supplies and needed materials. Lead activity with the students. Activities are held each Friday afternoon from about 4:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. The goal is for each activity to last for two to four Friday sessions.
After School Program Recreation/Activity Assistant One to four afternoons per week from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m.
Supervise elementary school children on playground and in activity room. Help coordinator maintain, organize and store equipment and materials. Requires patience & love for children, interest in outdoor games, arts/crafts, and/or board games and other indoor activities. Ideally, volunteer would serve one to four afternoons per week from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m.
After School Program Spanish Language Assistant One to two hours per week
Translate conversations and written material from Spanish to English or English to Spanish. This includes correspondence between teachers and parents of students in After School Program.
Assistant to Community Health Nurse 2 to 4 hours per week, between 9 a.m. and noon
Enter data, construct educational flyers, maintain health education bulletin board, assist with health screenings, flu clinics and other health promotion activities, assist with bulk mailing, filing, and other duties as assigned. 2 to 4 hours per week, between 9 a.m. and noon. Occasional weekend hours.
Blood Pressure Screen Asst (Comm. Health Nurse) Three hours per month and as needed
Take blood pressure for clients of Senior Nutrition program and other area events using automatic B/P machine (training provided). Need good people skills. Three hours per month at Senior Nutrition Center (first and third Tuesdays each month) and as needed for other events.
Data Entry and Administrative Data Assistants Hours flexible
Due to the heavy volume of information entered at the Ada Jenkins Center, volunteers are needed to work a few hours a week to assist. Basic computer skills required.
Dentists, Dental Hygienists, and Dental Assistants Twice a Month
Licensed dental professionals needed for clinics to be held at the Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson. Help needed on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Enrichment Assistants Fridays from 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm
Assist the Enrichment Coordinator with preparation/set up of activities; Serve as a photographer for the daily activities; Assist with student management by leading students to and from activities and during dismissal; Administer activity evaluations to students who leave early; Assist Enrichment Coordinator with the needs of the activity or club leader; Occasionally serve as club assistant or Friday Friend substitute; Come dressed and groomed appropriately Qualifications: Patience, love for children; Ability to explain activities in an age-appropriate fashion; Dependability; Respect for confidential nature of student information; Background check may be required.
Free Clinic of Our Towns Clinic Assistant Flexible hours
Responsible for organizing clinic and volunteer supplies, carts and forms. Also assists Clinic Director with special projects. Time Requirements: 1-2 hours per week. Volunteer to determine hours as long as duties completed by Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
Free Clinic of Our Towns Clinic Services Coordinat Thursdays 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Oversees delivery of clinic services to the patient: Referral, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Diet Therapy, and Discharge.
Free Clinic of Our Towns Lab Assistant 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays
Responsible for keeping laboratory records, completing laboratory request forms and maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies. RN, LPN, Medical Assistant or Laboratory Tech desired. Will train highly motivated student pursuing medical career.
Free Clinic of Our Towns Phlebotomist Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m
Volunteer Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting laboratory blood specimen on clinic patients via venipuncture, to be sent out for testing. Obtain other lab specimen if directed to do so (fingerstick blood sugar, urinalysis, cultures, pregnancy tests). Supervises volunteer lab assistant. Requirements include current phlebotomy certification, RN of LPN skilled in phlebotomy.
Free Clinic of Our Towns Physician’s Assistant Thursdays 5:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on rotating schedule
Observes and assists physician during patient examinations as requested. Escorts patients with chart to discharge area. Ideal for pre-med student or someone interested in pursuing health related field.
Free Clinic of Our Towns Volunteer Follow-up Coord 1-2 hours per week on Friday or Monday. Flexible hours.
Responsible for scheduling referrals and procedures not done during clinic hours. Also calls patients with test results. Requirements: RN, LPN, Medical Assistant or Social Worker desired. Will train highly-motivated student pursuing medical career.
Free Clinic of our Towns Volunteer Greeter Thursdays 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The Volunteer Greeter is responsible for welcoming patients and volunteers to the clinic, answering general clinic questions, and directing patients to the Screening Secretary.
Friday Friend Fridays from 2:45 pm to 5:30 pm
Assist the Classroom Coordinator/Club Leader with student management; Participate with students in the activity for the day; Serve as a role model and mentor for the students; Assist Classroom Coordinator/Club Leader with conclusion of activity, clean up and dismissal of students; Help students complete activity evaluations; Be prompt for Friday activities; Come dressed and groomed appropriately Qualifications: Patience, love for children; Ability to explain activities in an age-appropriate fashion; Dependability; Respect for confidential nature of student information; Background check may be required.
Front Desk Reception Various shifts available
Each of the reception workers at the Ada Jenkins Center is a volunteer. Volunteers greet clients and visitors to the Ada Jenkins Center, answer telephones and assist in data entry. Various shifts available. Volunteers are asked to work one shift per week, in order to familiarize themselves with the center’s operations. Shifts can range from two to four hours long.
Greeters/Intake and Spanish Translators Two Fridays each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Greeters take information from clinic patients, and assist in flow of patients from waiting room to dental office. Translators also needed for these clinics, which are held at the Ada Jenkins Center two Fridays each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Loaves & Fishes Shopper Wednesdays from 1 – 4 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Assist clients by selecting foods from the pantry for their families. Shoppers use a pre-determined list to choose items, which help provide a week-long supply of food for clients. Shoppers usually work one day per month. Pantry hours available: Wednesdays from 1 – 4 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Substitute pantry workers also needed.
Loaves & Fishes stocker Hours vary
Help put perishables and non-perishables on shelf in food pantry. Hours are flexible, but especially needed every other Thursday afternoon, after the arrival of the Loaves & Fishes truck delivers hundreds of pounds of food to the Ada Jenkins Center. Ideal for moms who would like to expose their children to community service, as well as for high school students seeking community service hours. Hours vary.
Rec Assistant One to four afternoons per week from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm
Supervise children on the playground; Supervise children in the activity room; Help children with small first-aid needs such as a scraped knee; Help coordinator maintain, organize, and store equipment and materials; Help children and coordinator with clean up of daily activities; Help the children make positive behavior choices during activity periods; Take children to the restroom as needed; Other duties, as assigned. Qualifications:Patience, love for children; Love of outdoor games, arts/crafts, and/or board games and other indoor activities; Dependability; Respect confidential nature of client information; Background check may be required.
Tutor Two days per week from 3:00 to 5:30 pm
Provide academic guidance to students during homework and academic skill building time; Be supportive, encouraging and firm with tutee; Communicate with classroom coordinator and program director; Participate in an evaluation process for students and program; Help classroom coordinator with daily tasks; Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions; Attend and participate in all orientation and training sessions; Be prompt for all tutoring and training sessions; Come dressed and groomed appropriately Qualifications: Patience, love for children; Ability to explain subject matters in an age-appropriate fashion; Dependability; Respect for confidential nature of student information; Background check may be required.
