The vision of the LEARNWorks program is to inspire children toward a promising future, empowered as lifelong learners, equipped to seize opportunities, and ready to face life's inevitable challenges.

To ensure our vision becomes a reality, we partner with families, schools, and volunteers to foster each student's academic development, promote personal growth, and provide experiences that contribute greater purpose and meaning to the education of students from our local communities.

The program serves 60 students. Students enrolled in the program are in grades one through five (somewhere between 6 and 12 years of age) and attend either Davidson or Cornelius Elementary School. Participation in the program is based on teacher referral.

Because the program serves children who attend two different schools, students arrive at different times. Engaged in the various activities at different times, all students spend 65- 75 minutes a day on academic skill building with the remaining time devoted to social skill development activities, recreational activities, or enrichment programs ranging from Boys Scouts to dance.

LEARNWorks is open Monday-Friday from 2:15 PM to 5:30 PM daily from early September to the middle of May. The summer component of the program is conducted in partnership with Davidson College and uses materials sponsored by the Freedom School. Freedom Schools is a project designed by the Children's Defense Fund.

The fee for the program is $50 per year per child.

The program relies heavily upon the support of volunteer to fulfill our mission and meet our goals. Opportunities for volunteering in the program include:

Volunteers must attend orientation before beginning their service as a volunteer in the program. Orientation for new volunteers will be held on Tuesday, September 8 and Wednesday, September 9. Both sessions will be held from 2:45 pm to 5:45 pm. A new volunteer would only need to attend one of those sessions. Training for returning volunteers will be held on Thursday, September 2 from 3 pm to 4:30 pm.

All orientation and training sessions will be held in a classroom in the LEARNWorks program area at the Center.
