Second Annual FIRE 2010 5K & BBQ Event
On Saturday, April 17th, The Ada Jenkins Center held its second annual 5K and BBQ benefit, FIRE 2010, at The Ada Jenkins Center.
In keeping with the event’s fiery theme, the event began with 166 racers having to "earn your cool" by competing in a 5K race and then turned up the heat with tasty home cooked chopped pork barbeque, ten, smokin’ BBQ competitors, local restaurant samplings, live music and a children’s play area.
Judges for the event included a rare lineup: four area mayors: John Woods of Davidson, Jeff Tarte of Cornelius, Chris Montgomery of Mooresville and Jill Swain of Huntersville; Tom Grogan, Board Chair of the Ada Jenkins Center, and Rod Short a representative from our Premier Sponsor, Sunn Enterprises, Inc.
Congratulations to the winners of the Hogmaster Division: First Place went to Mert’s, who also won Best Set-up. Second place went to Down, Set, Butt BBQ and Third Place to Brothers N BBQ. In the Backyard Griller Division, First Place went to Pork U and Second Place to Brew-B-Que.
Guests enjoyed live music performed by local celebs, Rusty Knox and Friends. Children enjoyed a bouncy slide along with face painting, tattooing and hair spraying. The event raised close to $40,000 which will help the Center continue to meet the tremendous demand of assisting families in crisis, providing access to affordable medical and dental care and helping individuals achieve financial independence in North Mecklenburg and South Iredell communities.
Premier sponsor for both events was Sunn Enterprises, Inc. 5K event sponsors included CMC NorthCross, McIntosh Law Firm and Healthstat. Sponsors of the BBQ included Mark and Julie Pfeffer, The David E. Maguire Foundation, JJ Wade Insurance Agency, Peoples Bank and 5/3rd Bank.
